Gotham FC took home three crucial points in the NWSL standings on Sunday, trumping the Courage 3-0. The win also had implications across the league, with the Washington Spirit officially clinching a playoff berth following Sunday’s contest.

The first half was all North Carolina, with the front line getting into dangerous positions in the final third but failing to execute.

The momentum shifted to Gotham in the second half, with Midge Purce breaking the game’s 0-0 stalemate in the 52nd minute. One-timing a bouncing ball in the box, Purce put her side up 1-0.

Purce struck again in the 63rd minute, finishing off a blocked shot from Ify Onumonu to put the game at 3-0.

Carli Lloyd put things out of reach for Gotham, dropping her defender before letting off a rocket from the top of the box to make it 3-0.

The win pushes Gotham to fifth in the league standings with the postseason within reach. North Carolina, now with three-straight losses, must win their Oct. 30  matchup against the Thorns in Portland in order to remain in contention.
