Ellen White’s dazzling third goal in two games was enough for Great Britain to edge past host nation Japan with a 1-0 win on Saturday.

The striker’s winning moment ensured Team GB’s progression through to the knockout stage of the women’s football tournament.

Japan appeared strong for the opening hour before the introduction of Manchester City’s Caroline Weir reset the midfield. From then on, Team GB never looked back.

With 16 minutes remaining, Lucy Bronze delivered a first-time cross into the box as White ran in, beating Japanese goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita to head the ball into the back of the net.

So far, White has scored all of Team GB’s tournament goals, leaving Hege Riise’s team unbeaten.

The win means Team GB has confirmed their qualification to the quarter-finals ahead of their final group stage game against Canada next week.
