OL Reign narrowly defeated Chicago in Tacoma on Tuesday night, earning the club its first win of the 2021 Challenge Cup.

Chicago started the first half strong, quieting OL Reign’s transition and creating opportunities on offense.

The game opened up in the 38th minute on a brilliant play from Mallory Pugh, who turned her defender and beat another inside the box before delivering a strike to the bottom left corner. It was Pugh’s first goal as a member of the Red Stars and first in the NWSL since 2019.

Just minutes later, OL Reign responded with a goal of their own. Capitalizing off of a missed clearance, Sophia Huerta found the back of the net, evening the score before halftime.

After the break, OL Reign started to climb their way back into the game, disrupting the Red Stars’ tempo.

In the 70th minute, Leah Pruitt finished off a successful build-up play along the left sideline, putting the Reign up by a goal.

The Reign added to their lead 15 minutes later on a far-post rocket from Tziarra King.

Pressing until the end, the Red Stars managed to score off a frenzied corner kick in the 90th minute.

The Red Stars’ late push ultimately came up short, sending the Reign to a 3-2 win.

The game marked the end of Chicago’s Challenge Cup run — the Red Stars finished the tournament with two losses and two draws.

OL Reign will play their final Cup match against Kansas City on Monday, May 3 at 8 p.m. ET.
