Report: NWSL will expand to San Francisco, Utah and Boston
Utah will be rejoining the league.
The Washington Spirit and Gotham FC played to a lively 1-1 draw on Friday night, splitting points in their Challenge Cup campaign.
The Spirit started on the front foot, creating several early chances in the final third.
The game’s momentum, however, shifted in the 22nd minute when Trinity Rodman was called for a foul against Margaret Purce, resulting in a Gotham FC penalty kick. Kristie Mewis converted from the spot, opening her account with Gotham FC in her debut with the club.

Weathering pressure from Washington’s relentless frontline, Gotham FC hung on for the 1-0 lead at the break.
Ashely Hatch subbed on for Tinaya Alexander at the half, quickly making a difference in the game. The 2021 Golden Boot winner got on the end of a deflected cross, striking a powerful low shot past Ashlyn Harris to equalize.

The 1-1 scoreline held until the final whistle, despite the Spirit going down a player in the 72nd minute after Amber Brooks was shown her second yellow card.
Friday’s draw puts the Spirit in second place in the East Division, just below North Carolina. Gotham FC sits in last place after last week’s loss to the Courage.
Utah will be rejoining the league.
