LA billionaire Todd Boehly has ended talks with the NWSL’s Washington Spirit about buying the team, reports Steven Goff of the Washington Post.

It was previously reported by the Atheltic in October that a group led by Boehly submitted a letter of intent to purchase the Spirit at $16 million.

Spirit co-owner Michele Kang is the only remaining prospective buyer, with Kang reportedly offering to acquire the team from owner Steve Baldwin for roughly $21 million. Baldwin and Kang’s talks have fallen through multiple times, with the two’s public fight for control of the club lasting through the majority of the 2021 NWSL season.

Players have thrown their support behind Kang, writing an open letter to Baldwin in October demanding he sell the team, adding “the person we trust is Michele.”

Baldwin has repeatedly frozen Kang out of club decision-making despite the vocal support from players.

The Spirit majority owner previously stated he intended to sell the team before the end of the year, a move that is looking increasingly unlikely.
