Lee Kiefer earned Team USA’s first fencing medal in the Tokyo Olympics by beating defending champion Inna Deriglazova of the Russian Olympic Committee team in the women’s foil final.

In a 15-13 victory, Kiefer became the first American woman to win a gold medal in the women’s individual foil event after finishing fifth in the 2012 London Games.

“It’s such an incredible feeling that I share with my coach, I share with my husband, with my family, just everyone that’s been a part of this,” Kiefer said after receiving her gold medal. “I wish I could chop it up in little pieces and distribute it to everyone I love.”

A four-time NCAA champion, Kiefer is currently a medical student at the University of Kentucky. Kiefer’s husband, Gerek Meinhardt, won bronze in foil at the 2016 Olympics for the U.S.

Kiefer’s gold medal marks the ninth total medal for Team USA.
