Selected in the third round at No. 34 overall in the 2022 NWSL Draft, Handcuff began her collegiate career at Villanova before transferring to Clemson. She finished her college career with a 29-13-4 record and 10 shutouts.
“Hensley is a fierce competitor and wonderful human,” said head coach Scott Parkinson. “She’s improved our club already in six weeks of being here. Seeing her grind and compete everyday with Ashlyn [Harris] and Michelle [Betos] has been a joy to watch. We feel we have special talent on our hands and are excited to see her blossom and develop into a top goalkeeper in our league.”
Handcuff is no stranger to the NWSL ranks, having trained with the Orlando Pride during her senior year of high school.
Gotham also announced that they have signed Japanese international midfielder Nahomi Kawasumi to a contract extension that will run through the 2023 season. She was acquired by the club prior to the 2019 season in a trade with OL Reign. Since then, she has made 43 total appearances for Gotham. In 2021, she registered a goal and four assists through 24 matches.
Gotham begins their season on Saturday with a Challenge Cup matchup against North Carolina at 7 p.m. ET.
