The 23-year-old from Laval, Quebec, sits at 13-19 in singles and has slipped to No. 34 in the WTA rankings. Yet the DC Open remains her comfort zone. She won the WTA 500 hard-court event here last summer, marking the most significant title of her career to date.

That familiarity gives her an edge as the draw gets tougher from here. Either Alexandra Eala of the Philippines or Zheng Qinwen of China awaits in the Round of 16.

The Polish star boasts a 93% win rate at the annual Paris Grand Slam, adding to a 43-3 tournament record. Only Chris Evert and Steffi Graf have claimed more French Open titles.

Świątek booked her spot in the Round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-4 third-round win over compatriot Magda Linette, avenging a recent Miami Open defeat.

However, the former world No. 1 faces a new test as the tournament turns to its second week.

Kostyuk earned her spot in the French Open's Round of 16 by playing some of the best tennis of her career. The Ukrainian international has dominated the surface this season, building her winnings streak on raw power and defensive grit.

Of course, the athletes have met before. Świątek has yet to drop a set to the Ukrainian across three professional encounters — including a 6-3, 6-4 2021 French Open fourth-round victory.

Magda Linette stunned Iga Swiatek with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 comeback victory on Thursday night at the 2026 Miami Open, ending the longest opening-round winning streak in women's tennis history.

50th-ranked Linette defeated the world No. 2 and former Miami Open champion, snapping Swiatek's 73-match opening-round winning streak that dated back to the 2021 WTA Finals.

Swiatek dominated the first set, breaking her fellow Polish player twice and winning 88% of her first-serve points. But Linette fought back in the second set, breaking at a critical moment and holding serve behind four aces to level the match.

Linette jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set, before Swiatek saved two match points and held for 5-3. But Linette closed out the upset on her fourth match point in the ninth game.

"I stopped doing anything well tactically," Swiatek said postmatch. "It was a bad match for me in the second and third sets. I haven't felt things like that for like five years."

Linette overcame 30 unforced errors to pull off the upset, becoming just the second player to beat Iga Swiatek at a WTA 1000 tournament after dropping the first set. Maria Sakkari accomplished the same feat earlier this season in Doha.

The victory marked Linette's second straight three-set win, after also coming back from a set down in her first-round match against Varvara Gracheva.

Linette will next face young phenom Alexandra Eala in the Miami Open's third round, after Eala defeated Laura Siegemund in three tough sets on Thursday. Linette has won two of her three career matches against Eala, though Eala won their most recent meeting in Auckland.

The world's top tennis stars are rolling in Melbourne, as the first round of the 2026 Australian Open wrapped early Tuesday morning with only a few ranked seeds suffering early defeats.

World No. 15 Emma Navarro was the highest-ranked US player to fall in the first round, with the 24-year-old exiting the season's first Grand Slam in a 6-3, 3-6, 3-6 loss to Poland's No. 50 Magda Linette on Sunday.

No. 11 Ekaterina Alexandrova also stumbled in the first round, with her Melbourne run ending in a three-set loss to Turkey's No. 112 Zeynep Sönmez on Saturday before No. 68 Peyton Stearns ousted fellow US star and 2020 Australian Open champion No. 30 Sofia Kenin in straight sets on Sunday.

That said, fans will miss out on one highly anticipated showdown, as wild card entry Venus Williams's first-round loss ended the 45-year-old tennis icon's path to a second-round clash with US favorite No. 3 Coco Gauff.
