Morgan and Horan both played on the 2019 Women’s World Cup championship squad. The 2023 tournament will be Morgan’s fourth World Cup and Horan’s second.
“We have a lot of leaders on this team among the young players and the veteran players, and among those, Lindsey and Alex have vast experience in big games, and they understand what it takes to win at the highest levels,” said USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski, who selected the two co-captains. “They are ultimate professionals and understand all the factors that go into having a united and motivated team. I know they will represent us well on and off the field at the World Cup.”
Morgan is familiar with wearing the armband, having served as USWNT captain for 22 games during her career. She also captained the team three times during the 2019 Women’s World Cup — in the final group stage match and in the team’s quarterfinal and semifinal wins. The 34-year-old Morgan is the USWNT’s active leading scorer and has the most World Cup goals on the roster with nine.
Horan, 29, has captained the USWNT nine times, starting in 2021. She led the squad five times in 2022 and was captain during the team’s 1-0 win over Japan at the SheBelieves Cup this past February.
“Heading into this tournament, I think there’s just a new responsibility for me,” said Horan.
“It’s not just focusing on me and making sure that I’m at my best every single day, but also making sure that everyone is prepared and ready.”
“Having two (captains) rather than one, I feel like it’s a shared load,” Morgan said.
“And it’s not only us. There are a lot of players who have stepped up into positions of leadership. … There’s no one player that needs to carry the load of everyone else.”
Horan and Morgan will serve in the absence of longtime captain and defender Becky Sauerbrunn, who will miss the World Cup tournament with a foot injury.
