Julie Ertz is not expected to take the field with Angel City FC for the 2022 NWL season, according to The Equalizer.
The USWNT midfielder has yet to report to preseason, which kicked off across the league on Monday. Angel City FC acquired Ertz and Defender of the Year nominee Sarah Gorden in a December trade with the Chicago Red Stars.
Angel City FC says they don't expect Julie Ertz to play in 2022, but they retain her #NWSL rights. Angel City acquired Ertz's rights in an offseason trade with Chicago but she has not signed. She last played in August, for the #USWNT.

“Julie is not planning to play in the 2022 season, but we hold her rights so should something change, she would play for ACFC,” An Angel City FC spokesperson told The Equalizer.
The 29-year-old hasn’t played in a competitive match since the USWNT’s Olympic campaign in August. Ertz competed in the tournament despite suffering a sprained MCL in Chicago’s 2021 regular-season opener in May.
The star midfielder has been absent from recent USWNT camps as well, with coach Vlatko Andonovski addressing Ertz’s future with the team on Wednesday.
“Julie was not ready to come into camp from the physical standpoint. And in the conversations that I’ve had with her, she understands that in order to get back into camp — and that’s not just for Julie, that’s for any player on the team — first and foremost, you’ve got to be healthy, fit and ready to play.”
Andonovski has continued to emphasize the importance of players competing and excelling in their club markets in securing a national team callup, even for USWNT veterans like Ertz.
