Players from the USWNT are expressing solidarity with the Canada women’s national team as the team continues its fight for transparency with Canada Soccer.
In an open letter Wednesday, the players of the Canada men’s and women’s national teams wrote that they are “deeply troubled” by the content of an article written by TSN’s Rick Westhead. The piece detailed the internal workings of Canada Soccer, which sold sponsorship and broadcast rights of both national teams to Canada Soccer Business until 2037.
In the letter, players say the article “raises serious questions about how Canada Soccer has made and continues to make important decisions that affect not only our teams, but the future of soccer in Canada.”
They also called Canada Soccer’s response to the article “disturbing.”
“Our sport is at a critical moment in Canada. Both of our teams have now qualified for the World Cup,” the statement continued. “However, Rick Westhead’s article raises serious concerns about whether Canada Soccer can be a proper steward of our sport and the revenues associated with the Women’s and Men’s National Teams under the current leadership and governance structure.”
The USWNT Players Association expressed its support, writing, “In solidarity, we stand with our fellow players to the North.”

This controversy marks the latest in a series of issues between the Canada national teams and their governing body. In June, CANWNT issued a statement pushing for equal pay as the men’s team went on strike over a lack of transparency and inadequate World Cup compensation.
CANWNT is in the midst of the Concacaf W Championship. The team next plays Jamaica at 10 p.m. ET Thursday in a semifinal match.
