Alexandra Eala upset Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekić 7-5, 6-4 on Wednesday at the Berlin Open. The 21-year-old Filipina wildcard knocked out the Croatian in straight sets to reach the Round of 16 at the WTA 500 event.
Vekić entered the match riding momentum from a grass-court title at the Queen's Club in London just days earlier.
Still, Eala refused to let that form dictate the outcome. After dropping an early break in the first set, she found her rhythm from the baseline and fought her way back.
But it was her poise on break points that defined the match.
Break-Point Saves Carry Alexandra Eala Past Donna Vekić
Eala saved 12 of 14 throughout the opener at Steffi Graf Stadium. Each time Vekić pushed toward a potential deciding set, Eala answered with well-placed serves and sharp passing shots.
From there, she carried that confidence into the second set as an early break gave her the cushion she needed.
She then held firm through four break points in the final game to close it out. The win marks her seventh grass-court victory of the season.
Next, Eala faces No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina in another tough 2026 Berlin Open matchup.
