Brittney Griner’s jersey was retired by Baylor on Sunday, capitalized by an impromptu slam dunk during a halftime contest.
Her No. 42 will now hang in the rafters, as the two-time national player of the year and Baylor career blocks leader made the trip back to Waco for a home game – her first since her senior season 11 years ago.
“Just full of emotion,” Griner said of the moment during an in-game interview on the ESPN broadcast. “As soon as [the jersey] started to go up, that’s when I started to break.”
Griner completed her Baylor degree in 2019, and said Sunday it “meant everything” to finally be honored and appreciated by the school. During her time at Baylor, Griner was part of the team’s 40-0 national championship run as a junior.

Head coach Nicki Collen has pushed for the jersey retirement since taking over in 2021. The moment was delayed when Griner was detained and imprisoned in Russia for 11 months in 2022.
It’s the seventh women’s basketball jersey to be retired at Baylor, and comes long overdue to some. Griner and former Baylor coach Kim Mulkey were reported to have a strained relationship, delaying Griner’s retirement jersey while Mulkey was still coach.
On Saturday, Mulkey was asked about the jersey retirement. “I think it’s awesome,” she said.
When asked what Griner remembered the most about her time at Baylor, she said it was moments spent with teammates and fans that stood out.
“When you look back at it, you start to forget about the stats,” Griner said. “You just remember the wins, and you remember all the other things.”
