Brittney Griner hopes to one day be named MVP.
“Before it’s all said and done, definitely would like to get that,” she said during the Phoenix Mercury’s media availability on Monday. “If I get MVP, that means I’m doing everything I can for my team.”
In 2021, the center ranked second in the league with 20.5 points per game and first in blocks with 1.9. She also led the Mercury in the playoffs with 21.8 points per game, including a game-high 28 points in Phoenix’s Game 4 loss to the Chicago Sky on Sunday.
Griner was named to the All-WNBA First Team on Friday for the sixth time in her career.
After Game 2, Diana Taurasi called Griner the Mercury’s “bread and butter.”
“It’s huge,” Taurasi said. “We know who our bread and butter is. BG is just playing at a different level right now, and there’s really nothing anyone can do. We knew coming into this game it was going to be a big focus: Got to get BG down low early and often.
“She sustained us for most of the game when offensively we didn’t really have a rhythm, and every time I looked up, she was making big basket after big basket when we weren’t playing well. That’s just what BG does, though. I think we take for granted sometimes how amazing she is.”
