The Boston Pride shopped local on Tuesday, selecting Boston University forward Sammy Davis with the first pick in the NWHL draft.
The Pride had traded for the pick just hours before the draft, acquiring it from Toronto in exchange for a first-round pick this year as well as a first- and second- round selection in 2021. Boston also received Toronto’s fifth-round pick this year.
Toronto became the sixth franchise to join the NWHL last week. Its team name is still TBD.
The 23-year-old Davis had 17 goals and 24 assists for the BU Terriers this season.

“I’m really excited to be selected first overall by the Pride and to be able to play in my favorite city next season,” said Davis.
The Connecticut Whale took Clarkson forward Kayla Friesen with the second pick, while the Buffalo Beauts took Maine goalie Carly Jackson third.
Friesen notched 10 goals and 20 assists last year with Clarkson after transferring from St. Cloud. Jackson posted a 1.90 goals-against average while going 12-11-7 during her last season at Maine.
At No. 4, the Metropolitan Riveters took Yale defenseman Saroya Tiner. Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Alex Woken went fifth to the Minnesota Whitecaps, while Toronto’s selection of Robert Morris forward Jayce Gebhard with the sixth pick rounded out the first round. Gebhard now holds the distinction of being the franchise’s first-ever draft pick.
