After a crushing team-wide COVID-19 outbreak and a shocking upset loss to PSG in the Champions League quarterfinal, Lyon needed a reason for optimism.
That answer came in the form of a resounding 5-1 win over Le Havre on Friday.
Of particular interest to United States women’s national team fans was Catarina Macario’s goal in the 79th minute.
Drawing a swarm of defenders, Macario deployed some brilliant footwork to create space inside the box and fire off a shot into the back of the Le Havre net.
The goal was Macario’s fourth in her last four appearances for Lyon.
Fancy feet from @catarinamacario to turn and get the goal!

Macario has had an eventful year.
In October 2020, Macario became a U.S. citizen. Although she moved from Brazil to San Diego when she was 12, her citizenship didn’t become official until she turned 21.
On the same day she was granted citizenship, Macario, considered a once-in-a-generation talent, was also called up to her first USWNT camp.

Then in January 2021, Macario received FIFA approval to represent the USWNT in international competition. That same month, the young star forwent her senior season at Stanford and signed her first professional deal with Lyon.
It’s an honor to have signed with such a fantastic club. I can’t wait to get started and to continue to build on its legacy of success. Allez l’OL! 🔴🔵 #TeamOL @ol pic.twitter.com/YdSn3SPi5E

Macario has made three appearances for the USWNT in 2021, netting a goal in her first game against Colombia earlier this year.

Club duties kept the USWNT phenom out of the SheBelieves Cup final in February. Two months later, a COVID-19 outbreak at Lyon prevented Macario from competing in a pair of European friendlies for the national team.
These disruptions have put Macario’s spot on the upcoming USWNT Olympic roster in question.
While she hasn’t had much time to integrate into coach Vlatko Andonovski’s system, Macario is showing what she’s capable of in France. The 21-year-old’s consistent goal-scoring for Lyon is certainly keeping roster speculation interesting.
