Chelsea is eyeing Lyon’s Sonia Bompastor as its leading candidate to replace Emma Hayes.
According to The Athletic, the club has offered a contract to Bompastor, although “nothing has been signed and the process remains ongoing.” The Lyon coach has won the Champions League as both a player and manager.
Bompastor took over Lyon in April 2021 and her current contract with the club runs through 2025.
The Blues are looking to replace Hayes, who is set to depart for the U.S. women’s national team head coaching position at the end of the season. She leaves big shoes to fill, which includes six WSL titles and five FA Cups.
Bompastor led Lyon to both the league title and the Champions League in her first year as head coach. They won the league the following year, but lost to Chelsea in the quarterfinal of the Champions League.
This year, they’re once again in the quarterfinals of the WCL and are leading Paris Saint-Germain atop the French league by 10 points.
