In exchange, Chicago receives full protection in the 2022 NWSL Expansion Draft as well as allocation money.
According to a team release, the moves “prioritize and honor the wishes of select players” within the Red Stars organization. Chicago had a simultaneously successful and tumultuous 2021 season, reaching the NWSL Championship before head coach Rory Dames resigned ahead of emotional and verbal abuse allegations.
The Red Stars also traded Sarah Gorden and Julie Ertz to Angel City on Thursday in exchange for draft protection.
In 26 games for the Red Stars, Johnson scored twice to add to her career total of 10 goals over 82 NWSL games. Doniak, meanwhile, is an NWSL Champion, having won the 2016 title with the Western New York Flash. Through 69 career matches, Doniak has seven goals.
Turnbow won an NCAA championship with Santa Clara last year. She was selected by the Red Stars in the second round of this year’s draft and is currently playing with Santa Clara before turning pro next year.
“This is a deal that infuses our team with quality young talent and bolsters our attacking options,” said Wave FC President Jill Ellis in a release. “Katie and Makenzy bring valuable NWSL seasoning to us, and Katie more so through her experiences on the international stage with Mexico. We hope Kelsey’s achievements at a top NCAA women’s soccer program such as Santa Clara translates to a promising professional career with us. We are excited to give Katie, Mankenzy and Kelsey fresh starts as pioneering members of Wave FC.”
It’s the latest in a series of roster moves by San Diego that saw them acquire Tegan McGrady and Jodie Taylor earlier this week ahead of next weeks drafts.
“We are working with a blank canvas this season and this trade shows our desire to build an attacking team that values both experience and youth,” said head coach Casey Stoney. “I am a coach that believes in developing players and it is at the heart of everything we do and I am very much looking forward to working with Katie, Makenzy and Kelsey in our drive to create a team they relish being part of and one in which they have the platform to perform.”
