DeWanna Bonner came to the Atlanta Dream for one reason: a shot at a third WNBA Finals championship ring. But the Golden State Valkyries had other plans, taking the 2026 title in seven games. Now, the 39-year-old is facing what might be the biggest decision of her 17-year career.
While Bonner hasn't said much since Satuday's loss, her postseason move to the Dream could hint at another run in 2027.
Why Did DeWanna Bonner Move to the Atlanta Dream?
The veteran's long-time team, the Phoenix Mercury, bought out her contract after they were eliminated from playoff contention, opening the door for a Finals run in Atlanta in was assumed to be her final season. Across the series, Bonner gave the Dream roster something it had been missing.
That showed most clearly during a semifinal sweep of the New York Liberty, where she carried a heavier load while Allisha Gray missed major minutes with a hand injury. Her shot didn't fall as consistently against Golden State's defense in the Finals, though, leaving her with a bittersweet finish.
Still, Bonner gave the Dream, and Atlanta as a whole, a heartfelt shoutout following her WNBA Finals run.
"This move to Atlanta was life changing, far beyond winning or losing a championship," she wrote. "The happiness and joy that came with this city/team was unmatched!"
She also teased there could be more to come in terms of her playing career: "As for what’s next? Just remember, if you didn’t hear it from me, you haven’t heard it yet."
Will Bonner Enter WNBA Free Agency in 2027?
Bonner doesn't necessarily need to add anything more to her record.
She's third on the WNBA's all-time scoring list, a six-time All-Star, and the only player to win three straight Sixth Player of the Year awards. But the deep run with the Dream might've renewed her desire for another ring anyway.
With WNBA free agency looming, the question is simple: Does Bonner come back to the Dream for another crack at a championship, or does she walk away after 17 seasons?
