Diede de Groot earns historic Golden Slam in wheelchair tennis

Diede de Groot made history Sunday, becoming the first player to achieve a Golden Slam in wheelchair tennis singles.

The Dutch player won the women’s title at the US Open, defeating Yui Kamiji 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

De Groot’s banner year included winning all four major singles titles and the Paralympic gold medal in the same season to complete the Golden Slam.

“To be the first one to actually get that title is just so special,” de Groot said. “I don’t think I will ever forget that.”

Shortly after de Groot’s win on Sunday, Australian Dylan Alcott became the first men’s wheelchair tennis player to complete the Golden Slam and the second player overall.
