Elena Delle Donne’s WNBA return is still up in the air.
The Washington Mystics star has started to ramp up her activities in practice but said she won’t put a date on her return to the game-day lineup just yet.
“Truly, it still is day by day,” Delle Donne said on a call with reporters on Monday.
Delle Donne has yet to take the court with the Mystics this season, still working her way back from a second back surgery in December. She has started participating in live 5-on-5.
“She’s made good progress, she’s doing stuff live, but I don’t know if she’s ready for live action yet,” said head coach Mike Thibault.
Whether or not Delle Donne makes the trip to Las Vegas for Washington’s Sunday matchup with the Aces will be “an end-of-the-week decision,” according to Thibault.
“I think we’re gonna be in a situation where it’s gonna be a re-evaluation every couple of days,” Thibault said, “and I’m not going to jeopardize her long-term future just to make sure she gets in a game.”
While Thibault says the former WNBA MVP is showing “flashes” of her 2019 self, he is still “careful to not get ahead” of himself.
The Mystics (8-10) will face the Las Vegas Aces (15-6) on Sunday in the team’s first game back from the Olympic break.
