Elena Rybakina locked up the year-end No. 1 spot in the WTA rankings on Thursday by beating fellow Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in the second round at the 2026 Pan Pacific Open. The straight-sets win at in Tokyo now puts her out of former No. 1 and current No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka's reach.

She earned it under Ariake Coliseum's closed roof, never dropping serve across 70 minutes of play while saving a single break point late in the second set.
"It's always difficult matches against Yulia," Rybakina said afterward. "I was ready for longer rallies."
The win caps a 2026 season with four titles, two of them Grand Slams.
Rybakina won the Australian Open and US Open before taking the Ningbo crown a week ago. She previously finished No. 3 in the WTA rankings in 2023 and 2024, then slipped to No. 5 in 2025. Up next in Tokyo, she faces Leylah Fernandez in the quarterfinals on Friday, just days after the two met in the Ningbo final.
Beyond that, Rybakina has a main draw appearance in the WTA Finals waiting for her in Indian Wells. She secured her spot earlier this year, before launching her strong Asian swing.
