“After receiving guidance from ownership, talking to players, and considering an incredibly diverse and talented pool of more than 30 candidates, I’m thrilled to welcome Coach Parkinson as our next head coach,” said Yael Averbuch West, Gotham’s interim general manager and head of soccer operations.
“Scott’s knowledge of the game is impressive, and his passion is infectious. He’s the definition of a player’s coach and the perfect person to guide us to future success.”
Parkinson took to Twitter on Tuesday, thanking the Red Stars front office and players.
“To the players…this is so difficult to even type,” he wrote. “We’ve been through so much together over the past two years. I will miss you all more than you will ever know.
“I know it’s been my job to help improve you all, but in return you have pushed me to be better too.”

Goebel Yanez joins Gotham FC after a nine-year professional playing career. In six seasons in the NWSL, Goebel Yanez reached the playoffs four times and was a 2015 MVP nominee.
Parkinson replaces Freya Coombe, who was hired as head coach of Angel City FC last week and left Gotham FC after their game against the Orlando Pride on Sunday. Coombe, who led Gotham to a 10-8-13 record over two and a half years, will become the expansion club’s first head coach as they begin play in 2022.
