San Diego FC selected Kristie Mewis with the second overall pick in Thursday’s NWSL Expansion Draft.

The Houston Dash midfielder, however, will not be heading to California. Following the draft, Gotham FC announced it had traded for Mewis, sending $200,000 in allocation money to San Diego in return. The Houston Dash, Mewis’ prior team, will receive $150,000 allocation money for losing her in the draft.

Mewis has been with the Dash since 2017 and received consistent call-ups to the U.S. women’s national team since 2019. The 30-year-old has undergone somewhat of a career renaissance in recent years, winning the NWSL Challenge Cup with the Dash in 2020 and emerging as one of the USWNT’s top midfielders.

“Bringing Kristie here instantly makes us a better team,” said Gotham head coach Scott Parkinson. “She excels in so many facets of the game and the quality she displays in the final third is world-class. I cannot wait to start working with her.”

With the deal, Gotham FC continues to add star power to its roster after trading for Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris last week.
