Liga MX Femenil kicked off Apertura 2026 with a new identity. The league has rebranded as Liga Femenil BBVA, unveiling a fresh logo and anthem after nine years under its original name.

Gone is the 17-match, single-table format. Now, the league's 18 sides compete in two nine-team groups, each playing 14 matches — eight against group rivals and six from the opposite side. That compressed schedule is designed to cut down on the back-to-back fixture weeks that wore down rosters.
Yet the changes also create uneven ground for women's football in Mexico.
Not every club draws the same cross-group slate, so strength of schedule will vary. Some high-profile clashes won't take place until the spring Clausura. Smaller-market sides could also lose visibility with three fewer regular-season dates.
One thing not changing is postseason play. Each group will still send its top four into a crossover quarterfinal bracket. Every round is a two-leg aggregate series through the final.
The league says fewer games will ease the physical toll on players and free up room on the calendar for international windows.
The Apertura 2026 tournament launched on July 31st, with league play continuing through the fall.
