The LSU Tigers routed Texas Southern 131-22 in Baton Rouge on Thursday night. That final scoreline gave Kim Mulkey’s LSU squad the largest margin of victory against a Division I opponent in NCAA women's college basketball history.
LSU vs Texas Southern: Tigers Win by Triple Digits at Home
Still, it wasn't until the second quarter when the blowout became a record-breaker.
The Tigers went on a 50-0 run spanning the second and third frames, with seven players eventually finishing in double figures. Freshman Anna Minaeva paced LSU with 21 points. Meanwhile, transfer Jada Williams caught fire after a quiet start, going six of seven from the field to finish with 18.
On the other end, Texas Southern never gained a foothold.
The visitors shot just 13% on the night and coughed up 38 turnovers that LSU converted into 55 unanswered points. The 109-point margin surpassed a record previously held by Baylor, also under Mulkey, adding another line to a coaching résumé that already spans two programs and a national championship.
LSU Tigers Honor Angel Reese Ahead of Game
Ahead of tipoff, LSU paused to celebrate a player who was instrumental in getting the Tigers to the 2023 championship.
All-American Angel Reese received her flowers for leading the program to the trophy, with Mulkey crediting her former star for the current team's success.
"All of them watched her play when she was here," Mulkey said. "Hopefully, because she played here, it helped us recruit those players. Everybody’s got to have somebody they look up to. They can be Angel one day."
