Megan Rapinoe leads OL Reign in comeback win over Gotham FC

OL Reign came back from a two-goal deficit to defeat Gotham FC 3-2 in Tacoma on Saturday night.

Gotham FC got off to a fast start, with Ifeoma Onumonu rifling in a close-range shot to put her side up 1-0 in the ninth minute.

Onumonu struck again in the 15th minute. The forward made a darting run into the box before slotting a low shot past Reign goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi to double Gotham’s lead.

With the brace, Onumonu has seven goals in 11 games this season, tied for the NWSL lead with Orlando Pride forward Sydney Leroux.

OL Reign started their comeback in the 57th minute, with Kristen McNabb rising up to nod in a Megan Rapinoe corner kick.

Sofia Huerta drew a penalty inside the box in the 76th minute, setting Rapinoe up at the spot. The star striker’s emphatic penalty kick drew OL Reign even with Gotham, 2-2.

Rapinoe drew another foul inside the box in the game’s 89th minute. With the game on the line, Rapinoe converted from the spot, putting OL Reign ahead for good, 3-2.

The victory Saturday marks OL Reign’s fourth straight home win. Gotham fell to fourth place with the loss, one point behind OL Reign and eight points behind the No. 1 Portland Thorns.
