University of Utah superstar MyKayla Skinner’s Olympic run is over, leaving the American “heartbroken.”

Skinner, 24, had two chances to move on to medal events — vault and floor exercise — and on vault, Skinner happens to be among the best in the world.
But only two gymnasts per country can advance to a final. Skinner fell just short, averaging a total score of 14.866 behind teammates Jade Carey and Simone Biles.
In her other strong event, floor, Skinner received deductions for execution.
Skinner, like Carey, wasn’t part of the team competition, having earned her Olympic birth when U.S.A. Gymnastics chose her for the individual spot the team earned at the 2019 world championships.
She was previously an Olympic alternate in 2016.
Skinner recently announced that she would retire after the Tokyo Olympics and complete her college degree.
“My body definitely needs a rest,” she wrote on Instagram.
Biles tweeted in support of Skinner following the preliminary competition:
so incredibly proud of this girl right here 🤍
