As the final two games of the WNBA season approach, it’s the last opportunity for teams to make a playoff bid.
The Washington Mystics, New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks all sit within the eighth and final playoff spot. According to FiveThirtyEight, the Mystics hold a 69 percent chance of making the playoffs, while the Liberty have a 26 percent chance to the Sparks’ 6 percent.
Washington Mystics (Currently 8th)
Currently sitting in eighth with a 12-18 record, the Mystics have the best chance to make the playoffs, according to FiveThirtyEight. But they’re also without Elena Delle Donne, who is unlikely to return this season. They’ve won their past two games against the Chicago Sky and Atlanta Dream, but have an important matchup with the New York Liberty on Friday that could determine who takes the eighth and final spot.
New York Liberty (Currently 10th)
The Liberty have dropped one game out of playoff contention following a seven-game skid, with their last win coming Aug. 18 against the Storm. Their last game against the Dallas Wings was a close one, with the Liberty falling 77-76. As a result, Betnijah Laney and co. are in a must-win situation against the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday before closing out the season against the Mystics on Friday, a game which could decide which team goes through.
Los Angeles Sparks (Currently 9th)
The Sparks might have the lowest chance to make the playoffs of the possible contenders, but it isn’t zero. After demolishing the Storm 81-53 on Sunday, their playoff push is still afloat, having pulled into a tie with the Liberty. With their last two games coming against the Atlanta Dream and the Dallas Wings, they have two opportunities to leapfrog both the Liberty and the Mystics, but will need to win both games and then keep their fingers crossed.
