Naomi Osaka’s return to WTA competition didn’t last as long as she might have hoped.
In her first tour appearance since the French Open in late May, Osaka was upset in the third round of the Western & Southern Open by world No. 76 Jil Teichmann.
Unable to get going, Osaka sprayed balls all over the court, losing 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Top-ranked Ash Barty, meanwhile, handled defending champion Victoria Azarenka with ease, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
