Nia Clouden is making the most of her senior season, dropping 50 points in Michigan State’s 85-84 double-overtime loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Monday.
The guard went 17-for-28 from the field and made 15-of-17 free-throw attempts to reach the mark. Her 50 points broke Michigan State’s women’s record of 42 set by Tori Jankoska in 2017 and equaled the overall mark set by Spartan men’s star Terry Furlow in 1976. Clouden is currently seventh in the nation in scoring, averaging 22.4 points per game for the 7-6 Spartans.
“To be in the same category as the great players who have gone on to great things is awesome and a great honor,” Clouden said postgame.

Clouden’s previous career best had been 34 points.
“It’s a huge accomplishment to me. I haven’t had that many points ever,” she said. “It wouldn’t have happened without my teammates and coaches and my teammates setting me some really good screens and trusting me to make plays all throughout the game. Definitely, they played a big part in it.”
Clouden is just the third women’s basketball player in Big Ten history to reach the mark, joining former Minnesota standout Rachel Banham and current Michigan star Naz Hillmon. The performance also tied Hillmon for the third-best individual scoring performance in conference history. According to Her Hoop Stats, it was the 16th 50-point game since 2009-10 and the first this season. The last Division I women’s basketball player to score at least 50 points was Cincinnati’s Limar’i Thomas, who racked up 51 in February.
Michigan State is back in action on Tuesday against West Virginia.
