Aliyah Boston had another dominant performance for South Carolina on Wednesday night, contributing 19 points and 14 rebounds in the team’s 55-46 win over No. 15 Duke. It was the No. 1 Gamecocks’ fifth win against a top-15 opponent this season.
The junior forward is averaging 16.9 points and 10.1 rebounds through 11 games, including a career-high 29 point performance in late November.
Boston was one of three Gamecocks to score in double digits, with Laeticia Amihere and Destiny Littleton adding 10 points apiece. The Blue Devils were led by freshman guard Shayeann Day-Wilson, who had 17 points off the bench in the loss.
With Boston leading the way, South Carolina had 45 rebounds to Duke’s 25, including a 19-5 advantage on the offensive glass. The undefeated Gamecocks (12-0) have out-rebounded the five top-15 teams they’ve beaten this season by an average of 15.6 per game.
“It’s a fabric of who we are,” coach Dawn Staley said after the game. “We’ve missed a lot of shots, too, so I think we’re well aware of that. We set ourselves up to rebound the ball.
“We’ve got length. We’ve got athleticism. We’ve got will. We’ve got grit. That particular area is where we create separation, and hopefully it continues throughout the rest of the season.”
After falling behind 17-3 in the first quarter, Duke trailed by as many as 16 before moving within seven points with 19.1 seconds left. The Blue Devils ultimately couldn’t overcome their 29 percent shooting in the first half, culminating in their first loss of the season.
South Carolina is back in action against No. 3 Stanford on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Duke will look to rebound against Miami on Sunday.
