In her first press conference, Seattle Storm’s new head coach Noelle Quinn emphasized the Black women who came before her as coaches in the league.

“I don’t do things for a title, I don’t do things for clout, I just do things to help others,” said Quinn, adding, “what moves me is my impact, and I know that I have impact in saying I am the first of something.”

Quinn is the first Black coach in Storm franchise history, having joined Seattle’s coaching staff in 2019 after winning a championship with the team as a player in 2018.

Former teammate and current Storm player Sue Bird says Quinn’s experience as a player and assistant coach with the team positions her well for the new head coach role.

“Noelle has a very high basketball IQ and understanding of the game,” says Bird.

Quinn is replacing mentor Dan Hughes following his retirement announcement over the weekend.
