The National Women’s Soccer League plans to invest in upgrades starting in August for all Paramount+ and Twitch broadcasts, the league announced Wednesday.
Improvements will include higher-quality cameras and more robust infrastructure and staff, the NWSL said in a news release. The streaming audience has grown 24 percent compared to last year, according to the league.
The U.S. broadcast schedule for this season includes two-regular season matches on CBS and 11 regular-season matches on CBS Sports Network. The rest of the games are on streaming services: 96 on Paramount+ and 24 on Twitch.
All matches are streamed internationally on Twitch.
The NWSL board of governors concluded a two-day meeting Wednesday in Chicago, during which they discussed the state of the league as well as plans for the future, including the streaming upgrades.
“I’ve spent the first three months of my tenure with the league on a listening tour speaking with hundreds of stakeholders, from owners to partners to players to fans,” NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman said in a news release. “The overwhelming theme was that while we have challenges to address, we have infinite opportunities to unlock our potential that will serve our players and the millions who support them around the world.”
Other notes from the board of governors meeting:
- The league plans to implement VAR technology for the 2023 season, and to increase investment in the development of league officials.
- Investment firm Inner Circle Sports will lead the competitive expansion process for two new teams in 2024.
- The NWSL’s paid attendance has doubled year over year, a credit in large part to the roaring success of new franchise Angel City FC, which has played in front of multiple sold-out crowds at Banc of California Stadium.
