OL Reign’s Tziarra King is speaking out after a tumultuous week in the NWSL.

One day after the Washington Spirit announced coach Richie Burke was stepping down from his post due to health concerns, The Washington Post published a report detailing alleged emotional and physical abuse on the part of Burke. The Spirit and the NWSL have since opened an investigation into the allegations, suspending the former Washington head coach.

In her post to Twitter, King said in part, “We really deserve better as players and people.”

King has been vocal about issues with league officials in the past, calling out former Utah Royals FC owner Dell Loy Hansen after he made disparaging comments about Real Salt Lake players protesting in 2020.

The investigation into Burke has instigated a renewed conversation about player health and safety as the NWSL Player’s Association and the NWSL continue to hash out a collective bargaining agreement.
