Portland Thorns midfielder Sam Coffey will make her first international appearance with the U.S. Women’s National Team in the squad’s friendly against Nigeria Tuesday.
Coffey is among three personnel changes from the USWNT’s Saturday matchup against the Super Falcons, with the 23-year-old replacing Andi Sullivan at the defensive midfield position.
Earning her first call-up to the Senior USWNT in June, Coffey becomes the 250th woman to notch a cap for the National Team and the sixth player to earn an inaugural cap this year. She is the 16th player to record a first cap under head coach Vlatko Andonovski.
“It’s easy to get distracted by that want and desire of that first cap,” Coffey told reporters during the USWNT September camp. “I’ll be ready when it comes. My focus is just being the best that I can be for this team…”

Coffey has been stellar for the Thorns this NWSL season, logging one assist and 22 chances created in 14 starts.
The midfielder joins a USWNT starting lineup with an average of 51 caps per player, with Alex Morgan and Lindsay Horan the only starters holding over 100 caps.
