Congratulations to the Washington Spirit on winning your first-ever NWSL championship. Despite a year with no shortage of challenges, you’ve made the District and your country very proud.
The Spirit defeated the Chicago Red Stars 2-1 in the NWSL Championship on Saturday for the club’s first-ever title.
Ending the season on a nine-game undefeated streak, the Washington Spirit overcame an investigation and firing of coach Richie Burke for misconduct as well as front office drama, with fans and players alike demanding owner Steve Baldwin to sell the team.
The squad also endured two forced forfeits for a breach in COVID-19 protocols, overcoming it all to bring home the NWSL trophy. Could a trip to the White House be next?
