PWHL Detroit locked in one of international hockey's rising forwards on Monday — right on schedule for the 2026/27 expansion team.
Akane Shiga became the first Japanese player in league history when she joined back in 2024. Now, she's returning to the PWHL after signing a two-year deal with Detroit through the 2027/28 season.
The move brings the team's roster to 16 as the 2026/27 PWHL schedule approaches.
PWHL Detroit Takes Shape Ahead of 2026/27 Scheduled Expansion
Shiga is no stranger to big stages.
The Obihiro, Japan, native has suited up for her country at six IIHF Women's World Championships since 2019. She also competed at both the 2022 Beijing and 2026 Milan Olympics. In Milan, the 25-year-old forward recorded a goal and two assists across four games to pace Japan's offense.
Still, her recent club numbers might be the biggest draw.
After leaving Ottawa following the PWHL's inaugural season, Shiga spent two years with Luleå HF in Sweden. This past campaign, she racked up 38 points in 26 regular-season games. She then topped her squad with seven points in six playoff outings.
In Detroit, she reunites with former Ottawa teammates Shiann Darkangelo and Daryl Watts. It's a familiar foundation for a PWHL expansion franchise building its identity from scratch.
