Reagan Carey, former USA Hockey director of women’s ice hockey, has been named the new commissioner of the Premier Hockey Federation, the league announced Tuesday.
As the third commissioner in the PHF’s history, Carey will replace Tyler Tumminia, who spearheaded the league’s rebrand from the National Women’s Hockey League to the PHF.
The PHF today announced that Reagan Carey has been appointed the league’s next commissioner, bringing over twenty years of leadership in the sports industry to the role including unparalleled experience in women’s hockey.

Carey served in her position with USA Hockey from 2010 to 2018, with the women’s national team taking home silver at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi and gold at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang during her tenure.
After her departure from USA Hockey in 2018, Carey stepped away from the sport professionally but continued volunteering at the grassroots level.
“Throughout my career, I have been fortunate and honored to have played a part in growing and improving the landscape of women’s hockey at all levels,” Carey said in a statement. “I continue to be energized and committed to moving the needle in the right direction and will be dedicated to the work required to build trust and elevate the PHF into a beacon for professional women’s hockey. I’m excited for the opportunity to continue making history with a relentless pursuit of success on all fronts.”
Tobin Kelley of the PHF’s board of governors oversaw a search committee established to identify candidates and fill the commissioner position.
“The search committee had the opportunity to speak with many exceptional candidates who were considered for the role of PHF Commissioner over the course of this process,” said Kelly. “What stands out about Reagan Carey is not only her incredible depth of experience in the world of women’s hockey but the collaborative approach she brings to the position.”
The board of governors announced in January a plan to invest more than $25 million in the league over three years, increasing the salary cap for the 2022-2023 season to $750,000 per team.
Carey’s appointment comes after talks between the PHF and the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association broke down, with the PWHPA opting not to pursue a partnership with the PHF. Instead, the association, made up of national team players from the U.S. and Canada, plans to launch its own six-team league in January 2023.
“I hesitate to say we’re competitors. I hope we can partner and support each other in the same way that Hockey Canada and USA Hockey do. You battle it out on the ice, but behind the scenes, that collaborative mentality is what allowed us to make a lot of advancements in our sport,” Carey told ESPN.
Carey will officially begin her role as commissioner of the Premier Hockey Federation on May 10.
