Sam Mewis will be the first North Carolina Courage player to receive the Courage Ring of Honor, with Mewis set to be honored in the team’s NWSL home opener.
During her time with North Carolina, Mewis won three NWSL shield titles and two NWSL championships. She’s also a World Cup winner, former U.S. Soccer player of the year and was atop ESPN FC’s list of the world’s best women’s soccer players in 2022. Recently, Mewis announced her retirement from professional soccer due to injuries.
In a release, Mewis said she is “humbled and grateful” to be receiving the recognition.
“I cannot imagine a greater privilege than to be inducted into the Ring of Honor,” Mewis said. “I’m so excited to come to North Carolina to celebrate the team’s home opener and see the fans who I remember so fondly. Thank you to everyone at the Courage for this amazing opportunity to celebrate my career with the club that has already given me so much.”
The Ring of Honor is meant to recognize North Carolina players that “have contributed substantially to the success and legacy of the North Carolina Courage.”
North Carolina has won a league-best seven trophies, of which Mewis was a part of five. She also was named a finalist for 2017 NWSL MVP and a member of the Best XI in the Courage’s inaugural season.
In a release, Courage coach Sean Nahas called Mewis “the foundation of this club.”
“Honoring Sammy in the proper manner means everything. She is the foundation of this club and has helped to bring so many great memories into our history,” he said. “While her career may have been cut short, the memories of Sammy being one of the best players in the world will last forever here in Courage Country.
“She deserves this recognition! She’s one of the humblest people I know and am fortunate to have coached. She has left an indelible mark on all of us here, is a true legend of our club, and someone I have the utmost respect for.”
