Italian alpine skier Sofia Goggia is a World Cup champion once again, winning the third downhill title of her career after finishing 12th in the final downhill event of the season. It’s her second consecutive World Cup title in downhill and third overall.

The win is a big one for Goggia, who suffered a serious knee injury at the Cortina d’Ampezzo Super G in January. The crash put her participation in the 2022 Beijing Olympics in jeopardy, but the 29-year-old was able to make her way to Beijing, where she took silver in the downhill event.
A fifth-place finish from Olympic gold medalist Corinne Suter, who was closest to Goggia in the rankings, meant that she just needed to finish the race to win. She did so in a time of 1:27.68.
“Now I’m really happy. As you all know, my season was really a roller-coaster,” she told FIS after the race. “It was perfect until January and with these two crashes… it was really hard to be at the Olympics, and the recovery I had to do was just off skis, and this is why I’m not skiing so well. But in the end it was enough to achieve the globe and I’m really happy with that.”
