A new era is coming for the women's bracket at this year's The Soccer Tournament (TST).
On Monday night, TST will crown a first-time champion at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. And the high-stakes final will feature two unlikely contenders.
Simply Futbol FC Stuns Defending Champion US Women
Simply Futbol FC punched its ticket by pulling off a big upset in Sunday's semifinals.
They faced the US Women, a squad headlined by multiple former US women's national team players. The US Women historically dominated the 7v7 tournament, winning the last two titles back-to-back.
However, TST newcomer Simply Futbol FC cleared its side of the bracket easily, going undefeated across five weekend games. In its semifinal match, Simply Futbol trailed the US Women by one goal in the second period. But they quickly fought back, equalizing in the target score period before midfielder Taylor Tufts netted a sneaky winner in the waning minutes.
Simply Futbol now faces fellow TST newcomer the Iowa Demon Hawks.
Iowa secured its spot with a 3-1 win over City Soccer FC Women, after going 4-1 in its inaugural TST campaign. A couple of late goals in the target score period of the Demon Hawks' 7v7 semifinal sealed their place in the championship, setting up a historic clash.
