An alternate on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team has tested positive for COVID-19. The athlete tested positive while training for the Games in Japan.

USA Gymnastics has confirmed that the athlete and another alternate are in quarantine, complying with COVID-19 protocol. The rest of the Olympic squad were not determined to be in close contact with the athlete that tested positive and will not need to isolate.

“One of the replacement athletes for the women’s artistic gymnastics team received a positive COVID test on Sunday, July 18. After reviewing the implemented COVID protocols with members of the delegation, the local government determined that the affected replacement athlete and one other replacement athlete would be subject to additional quarantine restrictions,” USA Gymnastics said Monday.

The announcement is the latest in a string of COVID-19 cases reported among athletes competing in Japan.

The Olympics are set to begin on Friday in Tokyo.
