The Kansas City Current erased an early deficit, beating Washington Spirit 2-1 on Sunday at CPKC Stadium to keep its unbeaten home streak alive. The win also tightened the NWSL standings race, with one regular-season match left before the 2026 playoffs kick off.
Washington's Lead Cut Short by Quick Goals From LaBonta, DiBernardo
It was Washington who struck first, with Clara Luvanga jumping on a goalkeeper miscue inside the box in the 12th minute. The lead lasted just 79 seconds as Lo'eau LaBonta volleyed one home off a lucky bounce. Three minutes later, Vanessa DiBernardo bent a finish into the net off a feed from Croix Bethune, giving the Current a 2-1 lead.
The goal marked Bethune's 11th assist this season, which is one more than the record Cloé Lacasse, Tobin Heath, and Bethune herself once held. DiBernardo, meanwhile, hit her NWSL 200-match mark in regular-season play by celebrating with her first finish in nearly two years.
But even after falling behind, Washington pushed back hard in the second half. Goalkeeper Lorena denied both Trinity Rodman and Rosemonde Kouassi with back-to-back stops in the 77th minute to keep the Current ahead.
Where Current, Spirit Land in Standings Ahead of NWSL Playoffs
The win lifts Kansas City to 50 points and fourth place in the NWSL standings, while Washington Spirit holds onto third at 52. Both clubs have already locked in NWSL playoff spots, but seeding is still up for grabs heading into Decision Day on November 1st.
