Nyara Sabally will serve as an assistant coach for the Sacramento State women’s basketball team next season, the school announced Tuesday.

“We are thrilled to add Nyara to our program,” Hornets coach Mark Campbell said. “She is like family to our entire coaching staff and will have a major impact working with our current players. She has had unique experiences of competing at the highest level of college and international basketball… She will work with our post players and help coach (Xavier) Lopez spearhead our international recruiting.”

At Sacramento State, the German forward will reunite with former Oregon coaches Campbell and Lopez. She also played with Hornet assistant coach Minyon Moore during the 2019-20 season.

“I am very grateful for this amazing opportunity to join the Sacramento State coaching staff,” Sabally said. “I look forward to working alongside great coaches and mentors that I have looked up to the past few years. I can’t wait to get on campus and get to work.”

Sabally was the No. 5 overall pick by the New York Liberty in the 2022 WNBA draft. The team later announced that Sabally would not play in the 2022 season “because of her current health condition.”

At the time, Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said that she “will get healthy and roll with us in 2023.”

Sabally has torn her ACL twice, first in 2018 and again ahead of the 2019-20 season. She missed eight games during her final NCAA season due to injury. The Liberty cited player health as “paramount” in the decision to have her miss this season.

When asked Tuesday, the Liberty said that Sabally still intends to return to the team for the 2023 season after working at Sacramento State during the offseason, and the team “supports her plan to coach.”
