Minnesota Lynx head coach and general manager Cheryl Reeve is set to be announced as the next head coach of USA Basketball on Wednesday, according to Doug Feinberg of the AP.
According to USA Basketball, the announcement will take place at 11 a.m. ET at Target Center in Minneapolis. The release did not mention Reeve’s name.
She replaces South Carolina’s Dawn Staley, who guided the team to their seventh-straight gold medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Reeve served as an assistant for that team, as well as the 2016 Olympic team that also won gold. She’s also assisted on two FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cups with both Staley and former head coach Geno Auriemma.
Reeve will now lead Team USA through the Paris Games in 2024, which will include the 2022 FIBA World Cup next September in Sydney.
The 55-year-old has been with the Lynx since 2010, helping the team to four WNBA titles – most recently in 2017 – as well as two other appearances in the WNBA Finals. Minnesota has made the playoffs in every season since she arrived, a streak that stands at 11, the longest active streak in the league and the second-longest in league history.
Elsewhere in her decorated career, Reeve was an assistant on the Detroit Schock’s 2006 and 2008 WNBA championship teams and an assistant during the Charlotte Sting’s 2001 WNBA Finals run.
Reeve is the first acting WNBA coach to lead Team USA since Van Chancellor, who coached the Houston Comets while also leading the U.S. team to the gold medal at the 2004 Athens games. Other WNBA coaches to have coached USA Basketball include current Georgia Tech coach Nell Fortner and the late Anne Donovan.
