Eight players were ejected after a scuffle during a women’s basketball game Monday between George Washington and TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
Five players from George Washington and three from TCU were thrown out of the game. The conflict began when the Colonials’ Essence Brown appeared to pull the ponytail of the Horned Frogs’ Bella Cravens late in the first half and escalated from there.
The hair pulling occurred as Brown was going for a rebound, and it is unclear whether it was intentional or accidental.
“We never want to be a part of anything like that,” TCU coach Raegan Pebley said in her postgame press conference. “It doesn’t matter to me one bit who started it, who said what. It doesn’t matter.
“I definitely know that we have, as do they, high-character kids that the moment got away from all of them.”

Both Brown and Cravens were ejected. George Washington’s Nya Robertson, Jayla Thornton, Caia Loving and Nya Lok also were ejected, as were TCU’s Lucy Ibeh and Roxane Makolo.
“I thought the officials … did a really, really good job of managing it, not just in the moment, but throughout the game as well,” Pebley said.
TCU ended up beating George Washington, 70-58.
Neither team’s conference — the Atlantic 10 for George Washington, the Big 12 for TCU — has commented on the ejections.
“Yesterday’s incident was obviously challenging and unfortunate for our student-athletes and coaches, and we are working with the necessary parties on the path forward,” George Washington athletics said in a statement to ESPN.
