It will be her 11th appearance in the tournament and first time competing in Toronto since 2019. Williams hasn’t played a singles match on the WTA Tour since August 2021. Her last outing was at the Chicago Women’s Open, where she lost in the first round to Hsieh Su-Wei.
She played in last month’s Wimbledon mixed doubles with Jamie Murray. The duo reached the second round of the tournament.
A three-time champion in Toronto, it was the site of her Tier I debut back in 1995. Her highest finish is a third-round showing in 2017.
She last played the tournament in 2019, retiring against Bianca Andreescu due to back spasms. Andreescu, who also received a wildcard, later beat Serena Williams in the U.S. Open for her first Grand Slam.
Sister Serena, who entered using her projected ranking, is set to appear in Toronto, as well as at the Western and Southern Open in Ohio.
