USC women’s basketball did the unthinkable Sunday, pulling off a 55-46 upset of No. 2 Stanford.
The win was the Trojans’ first over Stanford since 2014, when they beat the Cardinal in the Pac-12 tournament.
“I just thought we really took care of business this weekend, which is the understatement of the century,” USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “Stanford is so good. They’re No. 2 in the country. I thought we executed the game plan, were super tough and made plays the whole game. I haven’t even looked at the stat sheet, because who cares, right?”
Entering the contest, Stanford had a winning streak of 51 consecutive games against unranked opponents, the longest active streak in Division I. USC snapped that streak and also held the Cardinal to their fewest points in a game since 2017.
The Trojans defense held Stanford to just four points in the first quarter, a low for the Cardinal in any single quarter this season.
Stanford’s Cameron Brink had 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Haley Jones had just eight points as well as 12 rebounds.
Defensively, Stanford held USC to 27.3 percent shooting from the field. But the Trojans nailed eight 3-pointers and made 17 of their 26 free throws. Okako Adika had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Destiny Littleton had 18 points and six assists.
Stanford shot just 30.9 percent and were 4-of-21 from 3-point range.
“It wasn’t just turnovers; it was bad shots,” Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. “I don’t know that we can do anything any worse. This has to be rock bottom in terms of execution offensively, lack of screening. They got to the free throw line 26 times. Even with all of those bad things, it was a six-point game with three, four minutes left.”
The loss was one of five upsets on Sunday, as several other top-ranked teams found themselves on the losing end of their games, including No. 11 NC State and No. 15 Iowa State.
