Sydney McLaughlin is right on track heading into her second Olympic Games.
The 21-year-old broke the world record in the women’s 400-meter hurdles on Sunday night during the final day of the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, Ore.

McLaughlin’s time of 51.90 seconds marks the first time a woman has broken the 52-second barrier.
Dalilah Muhammad, the previous record-holder at 52.16 seconds, finished second in Sunday’s final to qualify for the Olympics with McLaughlin. The two runners are the top-ranked women in the world in the event and will be the favorites to medal in Tokyo.
Third-place finisher Anna Cockrell will join McLaughlin and Muhammad in Tokyo.
